YouTube Music starts AI labels; partner guidance separates full, partial and no generative use

October 15, 2026 · Central Time

YouTube announced on October 14, 2026 that YouTube Music is starting to roll out labels for songs created primarily with generative AI. It says the labels will also expand to the main YouTube app. A rollout announcement does not establish that every listener, track or app version already shows a label.

The label appears on the player page, and tapping it opens a menu with more information, according to YouTube. The company says it is working with music partners and using its own detection tools. The announcement describes transparency about AI involvement, not a certification of a track's quality, authorship or copyright status.

YouTube's partner guidance distinguishes Fully Gen AI, Partly Gen AI and No Gen AI. Its examples place complete generated compositions and vocals in the first group. Generated musical layers under live performances, generative help with lyrics and human-performed audio paired with generated video can fall in the partial group.

The guidance places ordinary pitch correction for minor tuning errors and automated mastering adjustments in the No Gen AI examples. That distinction matters for creators: the documentation does not classify every use of music-production software as generative creation. Partners are responsible for interpreting the stated definitions for their own content.

Partners can disclose through DDEX ERN 4.3.2 or later, CSV delivery templates or the attribute section in YouTube Studio, depending on their delivery route. The CSV contains_ai values are all, partly, none and unknown. In standard content delivery templates, the documentation describes the column as optional; a missing declaration is not an affirmative claim of no AI use.

YouTube says other signals may supplement partner declarations, and it may classify content as fully or partly generative when no declaration is supplied. The two sources do not establish a universal monetization guarantee or a complete enforcement schedule for every catalog. Creators should check their actual delivery route and current partner terms rather than treating the new badge as a rights clearance.
