Walmart opens to AI shopping agents with Agent Profiles and an Agent Gateway

October 22, 2026 · Central Time

Walmart announced on October 21, 2026 that it is introducing Agent Profiles, the Walmart Agent Gateway and formal terms for AI agents, a package designed to let customers shop at Walmart and Sam's Club through the AI agents and apps they already use - with permissions and controls built in from the start.

The problem Walmart is solving is structural: today, when a customer shops through an AI agent, the agent signs in with the customer's own account, so purchases made by the person and by the agent are mixed together with no distinction in permissions or history. Agent Profiles give the agent a dedicated profile tied to the customer, with its own clear permissions, spending controls and purchase approvals.

The Walmart Agent Gateway is the technical front door: an MCP-based interface that lets approved agents search, build carts and transact on behalf of customers rather than scraping the storefront. It arrives as a developer beta, and early reporting notes public documentation is still thin, so integration details may shift.

The move is a deliberate contrast with Amazon, which has moved to block third-party AI agents from its store. Walmart is instead rolling out what it calls a welcome mat, extending the conversational commerce integrations it already runs with ChatGPT, Gemini and its own Sparky assistant.

For consumers, the key protection is that agent shopping stays opt-in and bounded: customers set what an agent may do, approve purchases above defined amounts, and can review everything the agent bought. Walmart's framing is that agent shopping will not suit everyone, and the controls are meant to make its experience the most trusted option for those who try it.

For developers and rival retailers, this is an early template for agentic commerce done with the store's cooperation: dedicated agent identities, a sanctioned protocol interface and explicit terms, rather than adversarial automation. Watch how quickly the documentation, approval process and spending-cap mechanics mature before building against it.
