Snowflake previews CoCo inside Excel and Google Sheets
Snowflake announced preview versions of CoCo for Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets on November 3. Each adds a chat pane inside a spreadsheet that connects to live Snowflake data. These are preview releases, not a general-availability announcement.
From the pane, users can query data with natural language or SQL, build pivot tables, charts and formulas, and use semantic views available to their role. The feature brings those tasks into the spreadsheet instead of requiring a separate query window.
Queries run under the user's own Snowflake role. Snowflake says access control, masking and row access policies apply to the data that reaches the spreadsheet. That is a specific access boundary, not a promise that every subsequent use of exported spreadsheet data is controlled.
CoCo previews every change before writing it to the spreadsheet and records a citation to the source of each written value. Users should review the proposed changes and their sources rather than treating an AI-generated worksheet as automatically correct.
The Excel version also supports refreshing data that CoCo loaded, on demand or when a workbook opens, with review before the new results are applied. It can call Snowflake Cortex from cells through CORTEX namespace functions, including =CORTEX.ASK(). The release note names these additional capabilities for Excel.
For analysts and business teams, the preview offers a way to work with governed Snowflake data from familiar spreadsheet tools. The release note does not establish a new free tier, a fixed price, or identical feature coverage between Excel and Google Sheets; those details need checking before adoption.
