Sierra partners with Stripe to take payments inside AI agent calls

October 20, 2026 · Central Time

Conversational AI platform Sierra announced a partnership with Stripe on October 20, 2026, that lets customers talk with an AI agent, pay, and receive a receipt within a single phone call - no transfer to an external IVR system and no payment link by text.

At the point of payment, the agent shifts into a secure payment mode and the customer keys card details on the phone keypad. The entry routes directly to Stripe for processing, then the agent returns to confirm the transaction and continue the conversation.

Healthcare payments company Cedar was named as one of the first users. According to Sierra, 71.3% of calls in which patients begin a payment with Kora, Cedar's agent, end with a successful payment. "Working with Sierra and Stripe, we've closed that gap," said Cedar Chief Strategy Officer Dugan Winkie, referring to the split between asking about a medical bill and actually paying it.

Sierra's platform is now listed in the Stripe App Marketplace as a free, API-only app that works with Payments, collecting payment details inside agent conversations and creating PaymentMethods in Stripe - so businesses can connect an agent to their Stripe account without a one-off integration.

The partnership extends Sierra's April 7, 2026 launch of what it described as the first Level 1 PCI-compliant payment capability for AI agents across chat and voice, verified by the Visa Global Service Provider Registry. Under that architecture the agent never sees raw card data, and payment capture follows a fixed, server-validated prompt sequence rather than model-generated prompts.

Sierra says payments are one strand of a broader Stripe collaboration that includes the Personal Agent Protocol, an open standard unveiled October 6 and backed by Meta, Sierra, Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart. Built on OAuth, the protocol aims to define how personal agents transact on a user's behalf; Sierra plans to publish the v0.1 specification later in October.
