GitHub adds Fusion and generally available local sandboxes to JetBrains Copilot

October 29, 2026 · Central Time

GitHub announced an update to Copilot in JetBrains IDEs on October 28, adding Fusion model orchestration, generally available local sandboxes and generally available next edit suggestions. The announcement describes several distinct features, not a single new model or universal security guarantee.

Fusion replaces the Auto model option and is rolling out gradually to Copilot users. Users choose Standard, High or Max effort, while Copilot decides whether to use one model or combine models. GitHub says Fusion use is discounted by 30% for the first 30 days; the post does not specify a fixed price for every task.

Local sandboxes restrict access to the filesystem, network, credentials and other system capabilities according to developer or organization policies. A sandbox is a configured execution boundary, not proof that every tool action is harmless or that every installation uses identical restrictions.

Next edit suggestions are generally available in JetBrains IDEs. GitHub describes improved context awareness and inline review, including follow-up suggestions after accepting a completion. Developers still need to review proposed edits rather than treat suggestions as verified changes.

The Microsoft Copilot agent harness is now the default when available. A session sidebar can open sessions side by side, and settings can define the default permission mode for new sessions. Default permissions and the sandbox policy are related controls, but they are not interchangeable.

The release also updates account-switch notifications, settings access, plugin-update links and per-turn usage details. It reports fixes to edit reliability, cancellation recovery and selected-code context. Teams should check the current plugin and IDE requirements for their own installation before deployment.
