GitHub adds GPT-6.1 Terra to paid Copilot plans with gradual rollout

October 27, 2026 · Central Time

GitHub announced general availability of GPT-6.1 Terra in Copilot on October 26. The company describes the OpenAI model as intended for everyday agentic coding and terminal work on well-scoped tasks. Availability is rolling out gradually, so the announcement does not establish that every eligible user can select it immediately.

The listed plans are Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise. The release does not list Copilot Free. Buyers should not interpret a broad rollout headline as access on every subscription tier.

GitHub lists the model picker in Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, Copilot CLI, the cloud agent, the Copilot app and github.com. It also names GitHub Mobile, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode and Eclipse. A listed client is not confirmation that a particular account has received the rollout.

The model is billed at provider list pricing under usage-based billing. GitHub describes it as lower cost than GPT-6.1 Sol but does not supply a numeric rate in this announcement. Subscription access should not be confused with unlimited included usage or an established price for a particular task.

GitHub says early testing found better results on terminal and C# coding tasks than GPT-5.6 Terra. This is a reported early test comparison without detailed benchmark figures in the announcement, not independent proof that it outperforms every alternative or improves every codebase.

Business and Enterprise administrators can control access through model policies. Under default model enablement, new models are enabled unless an administrator has disabled the global default or this model explicitly. Teams should check policy, rollout status and current billing terms rather than assume that announcement alone grants unrestricted use.
