GitHub Copilot enters Xcode's built-in coding assistant in public preview

November 4, 2026 · Central Time

GitHub announced on November 4 that Copilot is available in Xcode's built-in coding assistant in public preview. The integration starts with Xcode 27.3 beta. This is a preview release, not a claim that the integration is generally available in every stable Xcode version.

The preview brings Copilot into Xcode's native workflow. GitHub describes it as another way to use Copilot in Xcode, rather than a replacement for every existing integration. The announcement does not give a performance benchmark or quantify a productivity gain.

The existing GitHub Copilot for Xcode extension remains a separate option. Developers can choose the workflow that suits them, according to GitHub. Teams already using the extension should not read the native preview announcement as notice that their current extension has been withdrawn.

Setup requires Xcode 27.3 beta and a Mac running macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later. GitHub directs developers to Apple Developer Downloads for the beta. Those prerequisites matter when deciding which development machines can test the integration.

Within Xcode, setup is under Xcode > Settings > Intelligence. GitHub says all Copilot plans are supported. That statement establishes plan compatibility; the short announcement does not announce new seat prices, unlimited usage or a separate exemption from existing account terms.

GitHub invites feedback through the GitHub Copilot for Xcode repository or Apple Feedback Assistant. For a team rollout, the stated starting point is a beta toolchain and a public preview. The release does not establish support for every advanced agent feature or give a date for general availability.
