Anthropic adds OpenTelemetry export beta, with separate API and SDK privacy controls
Anthropic's October 14, 2026 release notes announce OpenTelemetry export in beta for tracing Messages API requests and Claude Managed Agents sessions. The documentation describes export to observability platforms accepting OTLP. Beta availability is not a claim that every existing application already exports traces or that monitoring is configured automatically.
SDK tracing is configured in application code by installing the SDK and registering a tracer provider. API tracing requires an Admin to add a destination in the Claude Console. The two paths cover different activity: client tools and self-hosted sandbox tools appear in SDK tracing, while model runs, Managed Agents turns and server-run tools are covered by API tracing.
Metadata only is the default content mode. It includes identifiers, timing, status, token counts and chosen text such as agent and tool names and descriptions and MCP server names. This mode excludes model prompts and responses, but it is not a promise that all exported metadata is free of sensitive information. Organizations still need to review what names and descriptions they supply.
Full content adds model prompts and responses. Anthropic says the destination observability platform stores that content under its own access and retention settings, which customers need to check against their requirements. A trace export setting is therefore a disclosure and data-handling choice, not merely a dashboard preference.
For organizations with HIPAA, FERPA or K-12 data-handling restrictions with Anthropic, API destinations export only metadata regardless of content mode. The documentation explicitly says SDK spans are not affected by that restriction. Treating the API destination safeguard as a universal block on SDK content export would misstate the control.
Full-content spans hold up to 0.75 MB by default; content over the limit is shortened and marked as truncated, with images and documents represented only by type. The limit can be changed. Messages API full-content export can work with zero data retention by holding exported content in memory until delivery, while Claude Managed Agents remains ineligible for zero data retention. Teams need to check the particular tracing path and retention terms they use.
