How to compare AI tool pricing without surprise costs

Separate subscriptions, seats, credits, outcomes and API bills before choosing a plan.

For businesses, developers, casual users and beginners. The checklists are our editorial guidance. Specific source-based statements are attributed below; no tool has been independently certified or ranked.

Write down the unit and commitment

A monthly amount can describe a month-to-month plan or the monthly equivalent of an annual bill. Record the amount due now, renewal term, number of users and what the plan actually includes. Do not compare prices until those columns mean the same thing. Unknown pricing in this directory means unresolved, not free.

Keep app subscriptions and API usage separate

OpenAI explicitly says API usage is separate from ChatGPT Plus and billed independently. That is a useful example of why a paid app subscription should not be assumed to cover a developer integration. Check the current official documentation for the exact product and account you intend to use. This guide does not change the checked dates on older tool-profile facts.

Find the definition of a billable event

Intercom publishes separate information about Fin pricing and outcomes, alongside platform plan and seat pricing. Read the vendor definition before you estimate a workload. More generally, do not treat a message, an outcome, a workflow task and a model token as equivalent units. Ask what happens when the tool retries, fails or hands work to a person.

Build your own workload estimate

Use a typical week of work and a busier week. List the number of people, likely usage units, required add-ons and separate services. Apply the vendor terms to both scenarios and label your result as an estimate, not a quote. If a limit or currency is unclear, ask the vendor instead of filling the gap.

Check the limit and the exit

Ask whether the tool pauses, charges overage or adds credits automatically when the allowance runs out. Find the cancellation steps, renewal timing, export options and refund policy. Do not assume a trial is free of future charges or that canceling a subscription deletes your data. Read the terms that apply to your plan and purchase channel.

Use the directory as a starting point

Each verified price in our directory includes a source, billing basis and checked date. Follow that source before paying. A lower listed price is not a value ranking, and our profiles are not a checkout quote. Choose the plan that covers your test and budget, not the largest headline discount.
